Welcome to Insert Coin Here, a group exhibition curated by Nella Themelios and Kim Brockett that is part of the 2010 L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival cultural program.

About

Comprising two vending machines strategically placed around the Melbourne CBD, Insert Coin Here explores hierarchies of value and mechanised systems of exchange.

The Insert Coin Here vending machines contain limited edition 'fashion objects' which are randomly dispensed when a member of the public inserts a $2 coin. The artworks contained in the machines have been produced by over 60 Melbourne-based artists, designers and craft practitioners.

When is the opening night, so that I can come buy a drink and pat all the artists on the back?

Friday 12 March at 1000 £ Bend from 7pm to 11pm.

Will there be opening night shenanigans at each venue?

Unfortunately no, the machines will make a quiet entry and exit at each location. But if you'd like to celebrate with us let us know!

Fret not! Insert Coin Here is a mobile exhibition occupying 4 locations across the month of March. The machines will be in a different location every week. To make sure things keep running, we've divided the capsules up and allotted each week with a number of capsules. This means that while the capsules may run out before the week's end, they will be replenished in the following week - unless it's the final week of course!

Until that wonderful moment comes, save up those $2 coins and have a look through the list of artists to see what could potentially be yours.

We'd like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who came to the official opening for Insert Coin Here on Friday 12 March at 1000 £ Bend. It was great to see so many familiar faces (and fresh ones too!) and we hope you had a great night.

The vending machines sold out in a record 30 minutes, and if you managed to score some sweet goods, awesome! If not, hey don't worry as Insert Coin Here will be hanging around at The Thousands Shop in Curtin House, 252 Swanston Street, till the end of the month.

We're also super glad that Holly Fluxx from Melbourne Street Fashion came to the opening as she took some lovely photos as well as wrote a great article on the show (click here to read it). Thanks very much Holly, we really, really appreciate it!

The Insert Coin Here machines have now moved to their third location at Alice Euphemia where they will stay for the duration of LMFF (Sun 14 March to Sun 21 March).

This time round they've been separated with one machine at the front and another at the back.

We popped by this evening and there are a little over a dozen capsules left between the two, so act fast if you'd like to take one home!

By the way, if you miss out there's still a week and a bit left of the exhibition when the machines move to their fourth and final location at The Thousands Shop in Curtin House.

Captains of Industry: 8 - 13 March

On Saturday afternoon we were supposed to move the vending machines to their next location at Captains of Industry, but the rain held us back. Here is an obligatory shot of the bad weather.

Check out the intense spot of hail on the left!

After that minor setback, the machines were moved on Tuesday morning and are now sitting pretty at Captains.

Not sure where or what or who Captains of Industry is?

Captains of Industry is a gentleman's outfitters and cafe. Run by two very dashing men, James Roberts & Thom Grogan, Captains is relatively new in town having only opened a few months ago. Step in from 8am-5pm from Monday to Thursday, 8am-8pm on Fridays and 10am-5pm on Saturdays to enjoy one of Melbourne's best coffees, a mug of homemade ginger beer (potent on an empty stomach) or perhaps a hearty sandwich for lunch. Heck, why not have it all!

In addition to food, James is also a skilled shoemaker whose classically designed bespoke shoes complement Thom's sharp tailoring. We also hear that there will be a barber moving in too! Now gentlemen across Melbourne have no excuse not to be well-groomed from head to toe.

Now the important part: directions!

To get to Captains, make your way down Little Bourke Street till you hit Elizabeth Street.

Keep going a little bit further... Captains is located in the first left off Lt Bourke on Somerset Place, just before RG Madden.

Now turn left on to Somerset Place,

And there it is!

Make your way up the stairs. Don't forget to keep your fingers crossed that there'll still be some capsules left in the vending machines!

Insert Coin Here will be at Captains of Industry until Saturday 13 March.

Yesterday we made our way down to Triple R 102.7FM where we were invited to talk about Insert Coin Here on the Room with a View program. Presented by RMIT Media Arts Students, Room with a View is an hour long segment that is on every Monday from 12-1pm.

We were interviewed by the very lovely Laura and Hoon - thank you very much for having us guys! It was great!

Day 1: A sell out show at Craft Victoria in 6 hours!

At 10am this morning the vending machines were wheeled out and filled with their allotted amount of capsules for their week at Craft Victoria - all 130 of them!

By lunchtime there was a bit of a crowd gathering...

Lots of lovely people dropped by to check out the machines and buy a couple of capsules, including Insert Coin Here artists Kyoko Imazu, Dawn Tan, Gavin Bell, Dylan Martorell, Simon MacEwan (pictured below with the lovely Karen Rieschieck, owner of Alice Euphemia) and Simon Zoric.

By 4pm there weren't many left at all. In fact there were none...

And after this lovely gentleman did us the honour of purchasing the last capsules, while wearing one of Beck Jobson's David Lee Rocks necklaces of course, it was time to hang out the 'Sold out!' signs:

For everyone who's missed out, don't worry as the machines will be replenished weekly to ensure that each venue gets their moment in the spotlight. The machines will be moving to Captains of Industry on Tuesday 9 March where they will be for the remainder of the week. They will be refilled with 150 capsules, so fingers crossed you'll be able to get your hands on one of them.

Captains is located on Level 1, 2 Somerset Place (off Little Bourke Street, past Elizabeth Street) and we hear James makes one of the best coffees in Melbourne. In fact, we can attest to this! Hopefully they'll have some homemade ginger beer on offer as well as some delicious pear & blue cheese sandwiches available during lunch. Yum! Looking forward to seeing you there!

In the meantime, why not bide your time by looking through what's on offer. It'll give you time to start plotting ad strategising the best move to get you what you want... and please, no shaking of the machines!

PS, when you check out the machines, you'll notice a black box to the side labelled capsule collection box. Please drop off your unwanted capsules in this box so that we may reuse them to refill the machines. Thank you!

The first turn of the day

Our first turn of the day was courtesy of a very nice lady who patiently waited outside Craft Victoria's door from 9.45am until Kim gathered her muscle (ahem, Beck Jobson) and moved to the machines to their spot outside Craft Victoria.

Inside was Sarah McNeil's Little Black Robin! What a treat! As the saying goes, the super keen art enthusiast gets the adorable paper bird brooch.

Alexander Ouchtomsky

Originally from Queensland, Alexander Ouchtomsky is a recent graduate from RMIT's Fine Arts (Painting) course. Alexander has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Melbourne including Skin and Bones in 2008 and 2009 (Penthouse Mouse, BUS Projects), Zero & Not (45 Downstairs), Canadian Pharmacy (Neon Parc) and the Sustainable Living Festival in 2009 and 2010.

Alexander Ouchtomsky's work is constructed by a means of collecting and hoarding various different plastics, organic matter, toys, sports equipment and helmets. By piecing together these various two dimensional and three dimensional examples of western consumer waste either by collage or construction, his work draws connections between the forgotten histories of suburban waste and the possible potential of these objects as lost segments of an imagined civilisation.

Amy Borrell

Amy Borrell is a freelance graphic designer, photographer and illustrator for Mambo, Frankie Magazine and Darren Hanlon. She is the founder of Bakers Dozen, and runs a collaborative blog with Luci Everett (who designed the identity for Insert Coin Here) entitled We Make Words.

Her work was recently included in The Photo Album, published in 2009 by Frankie Magazine.

Andrea Eckersley

Andrea Eckersley majored in Fashion through both a Bachelor of Design and Arts at RMIT before completing a Visual Arts Degree at Emily Carr University (Canada). She has exhibited at c3, West Space (Melbourne) and Instead Gallery (Vancouver).

Andrea is currently undertaking her Masters of Fine Arts (Painting) at Monash University.

Jazz Hands, 2010, fabric

Andrea Eckersley is primarily interested in the way the body interacts with abstract shapes, both 2D and 3D. Jazz Hands is a series of abstract fabric sculptures, designed for the hand. This set of 10 finger covers is forever missing the obscure fashionable gloves they may have come from. Fashion can be a multitude of things, from a business to an art to an attitude. But one thing that is consistent through these various accounts is the experience of the dressed body in space and time. The city is itself a fashion spectacle, a parade of bodies and styles. Jazz Hands joins this parade, offering the wearer a chance to flaunt a fancy pinky or hide that precious pointer in your pocket. Be fabulous with a furry digit, or sparkle with sequins, Insert Coin Here offers access to jazz hands on the go.

Anita Cummins

Anita Cummins is an emerging artist who made her debut appearance with her installation Pantone Pom-Pom at Mailbox 141 in 2009. She graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts and a Diploma of Creative Arts. Anita is an artist who dabbles in many (usually craft-based) mediums and has recently launched a commercial range of handmade scarves under her own name. She also teaches classes in pom-pom making at the Victorian Tapestry Workshop and has big plans in the pipelines for her pom-poms.

Chad Catcher, 2010, chads, spray paint, paper, string

The Chad Catcher is inspired by office leftovers such as the ‘chad’ left behind by the hole-punch and paper from the office shredder. These paper scraps are gathered and reinterpreted by artist Anita Cummins into talismans for your home and office.

Antuong Nguyen

Antuong Nguyen is a multidisciplinary artist and film director based in Melbourne, Australia.

Antuong's works have been shown both nationally and internationally, at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (London), Transmediale Festival (Berlin), Melbourne International Film Festival, Australian Centre of Moving Image, Centre for Contemporary Photography, and Seventh Gallery.

He successfully completed a BFA in Painting at the Victorian College of the Arts in 2001.

Finding Each Other is a text-based meditation on the chance encounters between two individuals in this modern age of technology. In this context, within the material form of a shiny little plastic capsule. By sharing his favourite line from a novel written by Banana Yoshimoto, Antuong hopes to shine a light to his psyche, brighten up someone's day, and bridge the gap between stranger and confidante.

Beck Jobson

Beck Jobson is a compulsive doodler, collector of castoffs, hack photographer, music lover, maker of stuff and long term metal fan.

Ben Landau

Ben Landau is a young designer working in experimental, exhibition, event and theatre design. He creates unique experiences for users and audiences – from delightful puppet encounters to informative exhibitions and engaging theatre pieces.

Ben works from the perspective of the user, to understand how to best inform, connect with or entertain them. He hopes to travel and work with creative companies of various disciplines, in Australia and abroad.

I’m in the process of moving, de-cluttering my life, and ultimately getting rid of the op shop junk, the side of the road ‘finds’ the bits and pieces I couldn’t bear to part with. I’ve distilled this collection of beautiful objects down to a few, from which I’ve taken a small token, almost a glimpse of the whole object, and framed it as an object itself.

I hope to lessen the emotional impact of my culling, and offer a $2 physical peep show into my discarded detritus.

Brittany Veitch

Brittany Veitch is a felt and soft sculpture artist trained as an Industrial Designer. Brittany makes handsewn toys under her label, The Vibrant City, which was launched in 2007. In 2009, Brittany collaborated with Ben Landau to present Bio-Accessories at the City Library niches as part of Craft Victoria's Craft Cubed festival program. In the same year Brittany was part of Veni, Vidi, Vici, a group exhibition at C3 Contemporary Art Space with Katie Jacobs and Rohani Osman.

Pardon My French!, 2010, felt, chain, thread

French profanity, curse with style. Hand-embroidered felt speech bubbles in black, de rigueur for Melbourne chic, slung from gaudy gold chain.

Pardon my French! is a tongue in check expression of fashion frivolities mixing cheap material, commonly associated with mass production, with traditional craftsmanship skills to bring a subtle quality to what is an essentially crude trinket.

Emblazoned in finely detailed hand stitching, Zut!, a French expletive, pays homage to Paris, France, an icon for fashion.

And so to this folly, say oui oui, and curse to your heart’s content.

Caleb Shea

Caleb Shea recently completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) in Sculpture from RMIT. He has participated in exhibitions at RMIT's First Site Gallery, George Paton Gallery at the University of Melbourne, Monash University Faculty Gallery and in 2008, Caleb's work was exhibited as part of the Australian Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale.

Chloe Vallance

Chloe Vallance is a fine artist who has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions since graduating from RMIT in 2009. Her work has been shown at Seventh Gallery, Handheld Gallery, Pigment Gallery and at First Site RMIT Union Gallery. Chloe was recognised as one of the best students from 2008's graduate exhibitions across Australia and New Zealand in a review by Art World magazine (p.146, Feb/Mar 2009).

Walking Dolls was developed as a response to an RMIT fashion show in 2007 and was further influenced from a trip to New York in 2008. It led me to consider the similarities between the models and small dolls. I was interested in capturing the simplicity of intimacy experienced by each figure, a moment at a time.

Dani Maugeri

Dani Maugeri is a ceramacist and jeweller living and working in Melbourne. In 2001 she launched her label 'Dani M Designs' and has since released 8 collections. Her work is stocked at Alice Euphemia and Craft Victoria and Dani recently held an exhibition at Craft Victoria's enCOUNTER window which entitled Fix Up Look Sharp, consisting of her latest range of porcelain crystal shards.

What do you expect for two bucks!, 2010, ceramic, silver findings

If the work had a title it would be “what do you expect for two bucks!”

Whilst I wish to give the consumer a nice surprise when they open their egg and be delighted by the bounty of jewels they find…I simply can’t afford to.

So, what costs me next to nothing? Scraps!

Each egg will have a collection of porcelain off cuts and scraps that I have carefully chosen to glaze and fire. The new owner will find a piece of silk cord and maybe a brooch backing that they can use to assemble the scraps into an individual item of jewellery.

Dawn Tan

Originally from Singapore, Dawn Tan is currently a Fine Arts (Painting) student at the Victorian College of the Arts. Her work has been exhibited at Margaret Lawrence Gallery (Melbourne), Off the Kerb (Melbourne) and she has held solo exhibitions at the Red Dot Design Museum and Studio Miu Art in Singapore.

Mountain Tea , 2010, paper, plastic, string

I have always been rather fond and intrigued of mountains.

Growing up in tropical isle-city-state Singapore, there was not an alp I could beg my parents for a daytrip to roll around on. I lived in a concrete skyscraper and zipped through a cityscape.

Many years later in Melbourne, I found myself walking hours through parklands and gardens to school and back. Each day, I would pick rocks, twigs in funny shapes, leaves, and simple bits of nature. These items somehow brought me closer to my love for the mountains and woodlands, and I started painting alps.

I also love patterns, which could have stemmed from my trips to the David Jones Food Hall. I really enjoy looking at beautiful packaging and seek them whenever I am in need for some pretty patterns. The typeface, illustrations, layout and borders on the boxes always make me a little dreamy.

I like to imagine myself sipping tea from a cabin overlooking snow-capped mountains with intricate patterns. This tiny brooch I have made, allows me to wear my imagination close to heart, lending me space to dream a little more.

Deirdre Hoban

Deirdre Hoban studied Metals and Jewellery at Monash University, completing her Honours Degree in 2008. She has exhibited and curated an exhibition at the Abbotsford Convent and been a finalist in the Victorian Ceramic Art Award.

Although she works in different materials, nearly everything that Deirdre makes is based on straight lines and triangles, it may seem limiting to work within these constraints but so far the possibilities have been endless.

The concept for Insert Coin Here reminded me of the lucky dip at school fetes, I would always blow heaps of my cash there and was rarely disappointed.

So I looked through my studio for the odds and ends that I never managed to work into finished pieces, that have been waiting for their time to shine. I combined them with some special rope, which I have been holding on to for longer than I can remember, and worked these materials into magical new works, which I trust will not disappoint.

Ellie Mücke’s search for alternative approaches to fashion design practice began during her Bachelor of Arts (Fashion) degree, completed with distinction, in 2001. After a period travelling overseas, Ellie worked for a clothing company in Melbourne as a children’s clothing designer from 2004-2005. Frustrated with unsustainable professional practice of commercial fashion companies, she left to pursue her goals. Life experience from her travels and a strong belief in a more considered design approach undoubtedly inform Ellie’s current professional design practice. Her creative direction of reconfiguring second hand clothes and exploring interactive and collaborative design application through her label MüCKE are highly valuable examples of sustainable design thinking.

EnvelopE + MüCKE is also part of the of the 2010 LMFF cultural program.

Each project I undertake deepens my understanding of sustainability in relation to craft, design and fashion. I have a passion for sustainable fashion design practice, particularly the handmade craft of fashion design using discarded materials. The outcomes of my work are intended to stimulate discussion and encourage imaginative design thinking in the broader community. Tee-sets are an imaginative and beautiful solution to fashion design waste problems. Each piece is handmade from discarded Tee-shirts; their aesthetic, a play with the texture and form. Tee-sets, provide wearers with precious handmade accessories that are affordable and skilfully executed. The vending machine distribution method is a new opportunity for the community to experience ways to purchase sustainable fashion designs.

Sharing my passions and skills as a fashion designer I hope to invigorate conversations about sustainable fashion design and the handmade in new ways. I believe that this will lead to deepening the communities understanding of craft, design, fashion and sustainability in their own lives.

Emily O'Brien

Emily O'Brien is a trained goldsmith and interior designer. She most recently toured for Electrofringe with her performance art group, Optical Eyes, that explores psychedelic visual stimulation and overload through layers of film, mechanical props, costume and sound.

In 2009 the National Gallery of Australia acquired Emily’s Hair Chairs for the Wolfensohn Gift collection. Earlier that year Emily collaborated with eX de Medici for the Canberra-based show Retroactive. In 2005 Emily received an artsACT travel grant to Germany to exhibit her Chip on the Shoulder brooches in the international craft exhibition, Talente in Munich.

Emma Greenwood is a shoemaker and textiles artist. Emma has participated in several Craft Victoria exhibitions including Cut and Paste - Experimental Paper Footwear (enCOUNTER, 2007), In The Making (part of Craft Cubed, 2008) and most recently in Shoe Show (curated by Nella Themelios, 2009).

An experienced shoemaker, Emma has been working with shoes since 1997 and in 2005 she launched her accessories label Emerge. Emma is also the proud mother of Leo Jinks.

How often do you purchase junk food or drinks from a vending machine? Once the item is consumed, you’re left with rubbish to dispose of, and have nothing to show for it but an absence of change in your purse, and short relief from hunger.

Now picture a more satisfying vending machine, which gives limited edition fashion objects; a lucky dip, which delivers an unexpected yet hopefully much beloved item. Practical, functional adornment, at a great price!

So imagine this conversation:

A: Hey what’s this tassel hanging off your bag?

B: Well I picked this up at Fashion Week in 2010; there was a cool vending machine, which had limited edition fashion objects in those little capsules. I just put in $2 and got this leather key ring with tassels and wooden beads. I love it, I’ve been using it for years and it’s become like a talisman, or my version of worry beads!

A: Damn, I wish you had told me about that vending machine, I could use a new key ring.

Emmet O'Dwyer

After graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2008 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Printmaking), Emmet O'Dwyer went on to complete his Honours degree at Monash University. French-born, Melbourne-based jeweller Estelle Dévé launched her first collection For J.D., with love and squalor in late 2009.

Her latest collection Lunar Mare is an exploration of cinematic space odysseys, ancient African tribes and Grecian myths.

Estelle is part of this year's Penthouse Mouse, a temporary fashion, art and events space that is part of the 2010 L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival cultural program, and her work is stocked at various international boutiques including Kabiri (London) and Blackmarket (Singapore).

Like a jewellery Frankenstein, this item is composed of a plethora of different unused materials: fluorite crystals, metal chains and pewter castings. Oddly reassembled, the different textures combine to form one futuristic pendant on a chain, creating a rough but delicate item as if out of a Mary Shelley novel.

The one certainty of the world of fashion can be summed up in the old adage “All that’s old is new again”. Styles come in and out as if on a big merry-go-round, regardless of their position on the continuum which extends from flattering to downright ridiculous. It seems that our collective sense of nostalgia grows with each passing decade, and we delve into past styles as a way of revisiting ‘the good old days’. Not restricted to clothing, old school technology has wormed its way back into favour with the cool kids, with everything from vintage ghetto blasters to retired Ataris able to shine again under the banner of Retro.

For my contribution to Insert Coin Here, I’ve chosen to work with a much-loved icon of the ‘80s: the VHS tape. These one-off talismans are hand-crafted out of old video tapes from my personal collection. I hope that as you wear them the slightly jumpy images and wavering soundtrack of my old copy of Dirty Dancing will be with you in spirit.

Gemma Patford runs fashion label called NotToday out of her studio in Melbourne. NotToday is a small independent clothing label which embodies creative ideas with simple, recognisable, fun and above all comfortable designs. NotToday sells a variety of handmade goods and clothing.

Gemma is primarily a pattern maker and seamstress and her works are known for their use of colour, texture and popular forms. Gemma’s work draws heavily on popular culture references, primarily everyday objects enlarged and used in contrasting circumstances.

With the fax machine becoming gradually more affordable, the people of 1983 were looking for something new. iPods weren’t invented, and it was going to be several years before Sony had a Portable CD player with Electronic Skip Protection.

Retailing for about $4000, the Motorola DynaTAC 8000 was the hottest thing out, being cavorted about by Wall Street wheelers and dealers, corporate big wigs and Michael Douglas in ‘Wall Street’.

Gemma Patford’s take on the DynaTAC 8000 is similar on many levels. The call quality is poor, and it's still sans email and instant messaging.

Genevieve Callaghan

During her Creative Arts degree at La Trobe University, Genevieve Callaghan spent her time dedicated towards developing her skills as a script-writer, film-maker and performer. Genevieve's theatre and spoken word performances include Self Cultivation (2009), Sunny Side Up (part of the Adelaide Fringe Festival, 2009) and To Still My Beating Mind (2008). In 2007 she directed a short film entitled Cut Out.

‘Fashion object’.

For me, the phrase conjures up conflicting visions, a kind ‘wheel of fortune’ coloured with shades of human desire and revulsion; coveting, discarding, but always revolving around the ‘thing’.

I have created and replicated the image of a ‘thumbs up’ and a ‘thumbs down’, fused at the ‘pinkie’ finger, to print onto fabric or plywood (as a brooch or stand-alone artwork). From the Colosseum of ancient Rome to the gossip pages of tabloid magazines, the ‘thumbs up / thumbs down’ has been a potent action, whether it is actually given or inferred in the abstract. It has had the power to give honour and kudos, or take life and dignity.

My expression of this time-honoured image, as it grips one piece of fabric / thread / chain / lace between its opposing hands, will encompass the two basic fortunes for which a fashion object is destined; acceptance and rejection.

Lifestyle Fantasy is about the perceived status that one acquires through the ownership of a ‘luxury handbag’. I was thinking about big brand collaboration. I was imagining a bag plastered with every big brand logo and the amount of supposed status that could be acquired for the owner.

I am also interested in the idea of a brand battle. If two bags looked the same and one was Chanel and the other Prada which would you choose? Which brand lifestyle would you prefer to buy into?

I also wanted to explore the anxieties we have from the focus we have on how others perceive us... and our bags.

'Things Change' is a statement designed to remind us of the only constant, i.e. change, I have been painting this statement on top of found landscape paintings for the last 3 months. As well as referring to matters cultural and environmental, the paintings were intended to be used as a pick-me-up, a reminder that whatever problem we are experiencing now, it will invariably change to some slightly different form of trouble tomorrow.

For this show I am making an edition of stones with this statement painted on them. Within the context of the show they could be seen as statement on the constantly shifting, turning world of fashion and the slower yet still inexorably changing journey of the rock it’s painted on.

Lauren Brown

Graduating from the National Art School in 2002, Lauren Brown has since exhibited in a range of artist-run-spaces and public places in London, Sydney and Melbourne. Now based in Melbourne, Lauren is a recent RMIT Masters Graduate in Public Art and her work is currently focused on sound in the public space. Her main motif is the use of the colour red as a prime indicator.

Lauren is also half of the collaborative duo, The Candystripers, with pop-artist Gemma Jones.
